Works with 6.2, eh? That's a good trick since the bot doesn't even work for 6.2 yet.

:) It works with whatever version Honorbuddy works with and the current SuperGuildInvite works with. SuperGuildInvite was updated to work with 6.2 last week.

Sorry to say that, but that plugin is the most superfluous and annoying one, I've ever seen.
As soon as you start a new character, it will be downright bombarded with tons of guild invites from hundreds of bots.
This is not only bothering but also a good reason for other players to report you and to lose your account at the speed of light.

As a botter, I'd never use any verbose plugin.

• Nice copy/paste of my addon functions (and then claim it your own).
• Thanks for not asking me or Sidalol if it was ok to do this.
• Great job at making the user have zero control over what HB do (as you just brute force it).

Have to agree. This is modified work belonging to AknA and permission was not given?

You realise your code is distributed under the GNU license, meaning anyone is free to share, use, edit or redistribute your work, right?
I credited you in both the thread header, in the thread itself, on the code repository, in the code, and even in the "plugin loaded"-message, even though I strictly didn't have to.
The plugin does literally the exact same thing your original one did, if you don't want it to invite people, you disable it in HB.

I'm terribly sorry for reviving your dead project that has had countless requests to be updated, and then making freely available.

Where do you read that?

BTW:
It's common courtesy and decency to ask at least the author before the code is edited. ;)
Seems that people more and more unlearn that unconsciously.

Indeed, the work was clearly released under GPLv3, which the author(s) had complete control over. This reboot is a fair use under the terms in which the original work was released.

We have also moved the original thread to the Archives, since it was obviously not being maintained and was simply teasing the Community. If the original authors would like to restore the original project, please report the thread and the mods will be glad to dig it out of the Archives.

The claims of "works on 6.2" are dubious, as neither the live game client, nor Honorbuddy is yet at a 6.2 release. At the time of this writing, the game client is 6.1.2.xxxxx. We have adjusted the thread title to reflect reality.

cheers,

Not quite correct in my eyes.
The SVN link from Hans_S doesn't mention GNU license with any words and a GNU license hint is not distributed in the ZIP or at his SVN repository either.
I don't want to be holier than the pope, but it seems to be a new, selfmade product from outward views.

Hi, Corleone,

We understand your concern. Bossland GmbH does not allow 'theft' or 'suborning theft' of any form in its forums. In fact it is a perma-bannable offense.

In the past, we have banned many people for such things. We take such matters very seriously and investigate when 'theft' accusations are made. We did not provide these findings in our original reply, because we thought it to be unnecessary. However, it seems such is not the case. You can see our findings below.

From the original [PimpMyGuild] post, there is no explicit statement of a license. However, we clearly see the repository identified:

The GPLv3 License is clearly spelled out in the repository itself:

and

The Repository itself is an authoritative source. .Zip files will only be copies of that source (if such a repository exists). This should make it quite clear that Hans_S has done nothing wrong. If there was a mistake and GPLv3 was not their intent, the mistake was on the part of the original authors.

Hans_S appears to have acted in good faith. And as required by GPLv3, Hans_S has cited the original source material and given credit to the original authors.

cheers,
chinajade

Uh. Yes it does. I don't mean to be an asshole (not entirely true), but get off your horse, and shut up. Your project is dead, you let it die, and someone picked it up. Let it go.

It is not common courtesy. If it looks like your project is dead, and someone picks up it, its fine. Stop being a pansy about this.

Hi, Roequasi,

All Community Developers have a right to be concerned about theft (i.e., someone violating the terms of the license the work was released under), and are free to express their concerns. The issue should be vetted, and that's all Corleone was doing. Expressing concern was the right thing to do.

In the past, we've had many examples of people outright stealing others' work and claiming it on their own, or taking the work in directions the author didn't want it to go. Depending on the license, not all projects are fair game to be picked up and built on. This is why licenses exist in the first place.

It is also courteous (even if not required) to give due credit to the original author for not only the code, but the ideas embodied. Showing such respect is a significant form 'thanks' and flattery to the original developer. It also has other beneficial side-effects to the developer re-releasing the original work.

There is no reason to become hostile because such concerns are expressed.

cheers,
chinajade

Not being hostile. Being honest.

Licenses are meant to prevent theft of ideas, not to prevent new development, which is clearly what Corleone is hoping to do. If you are going to complain about someone trying to steal your code, maybe you should keep better track of your licenses and how you release your code. (Side note, its not even his/her code.)

Also, Hans_S gave a huge shoutout, twice in the original post. Thats not what i was commenting on. Corleone said its common courtesy to ask before editing code. Thats simply NOT true.

Hi again, Roequasi,

Apologies for mis-characterizing your reply.

You seriously misunderstand licenses then. Licenses are meant to do what their text states... not what you want it to say, or how you think it should be. Indeed, licenses can be used to prevent new development from the original code. But, you won't find such licenses in these forums, because the Bossland GmbH forum requires one of the approved open source licenses, if you wish to make work available here.

Hans_S was right to do so. Also, the GPLv3 license requires this. But, its the right thing to do, nevertheless.

Agreed. Its the license that gives you the permission (or denies such) to take and edit others' code. By selecting an appropriate license, the original developer prearranges for others to take and modify his code without the explicit need to contact him and ask for permission.

Seasoned developers understand that the license is sufficient for taking their work and building on it. But in a Community forum, there are other dynamics involved. The vast majority of our Community does not understand what licenses are for, or how they work. For many, its a good chance that "taking without asking" can discourage the original developer, and he may choose to abandon one or more projects if "that's how its going to be". These hard feelings that can be avoided with a little courtesy.

If you wish to continue this discussion, please open a new thread in the Community Developer forum, since this discussion is waaaay off-topic for this thread.

cheers,
chinajade

Ok, now what annoyed me.

• I know what license I put on that work, and I know it doesn't require that he asks for permission, but it's still common courtesy in a community like this where I'm actually active to still do so.
• Asking for donation and claiming it your own work when you haven't added anything new as he only copied some lua functions to C# and added it to the plugin instead of the addon removing any customizasion and security for the user, to continue to build on a project is fine under the license, to copy/paste and release the same thing under your own name is not.
• Bruteforcing the code like he does with this plugin is only going to cause problem for the user as it has zero security and no pause between the macro commands it's easily detected by blizzard. As it's a macro command that is being sent and it will send multiple ones per second how long do you think it will take Blizzard to pick up on it ?

That's not my intention.
I really appreciate each advanced development, no matter what.
The problem I have is that there is no hint on the GPLv3 on Hans_S's site.
It's only on AknA's site (screenshot from roequasi).

Noone would be aware of it, if only Hans_S's SVN link is distributed from A to B without any further hint or reading this forum.
Permanently including a text file (i.e. license.txt) in Hans_S's repository or /ZIP would be nice and solve all problems.

sadly I remember sending you a "donation" for you to fix the addon, and attempted to convince others to do the same for you, idk how many people ended up doing so, but i never saw any work done on this addon, so I'm glad its been somewhat worked on by someone, even if it is just a hacked together mess.

I love your work, but definitely waited way to long to see this fixed.

Han_S broke no rules, according to the HB ToS, he had the right to do exactly what he did.

so Bravo to Han_S
