This guide will teach you how to download and update a SVN gotten from someone here on the forums. I included both a video and picture guide on how to do this, as I know I don't like videos sometimes. SVN is the most popular on this forum due to its ease of use with Tortoise SVN. There are others such as Git, which recently has stepped over SVN with a very nice windows client, but is still unpopular because it used to be very difficult to manage.

      1. Download Tortoise SVN from their Downloads Page. Using the wrong OS download can result in setup failure!
      2. Click through the Setup procedure as you would with installing any program. You should keep in mind a couple things though.

      • It may want you to close out of most programs.
      • You can install it to a separate HD just fine as long as it has correct permissions.
      • The "Command Line Client Tools" are unnecessary for what we are doing.

      3. Restart Your Computer!

      4. Get a SVN link from someone on the forums and copy it. They are typically presented very clearly for users to use accompanied with a link to a guide like this. You can find a list of popular projects created by ChinaJade here: [INDEX] Popular Projects List. When opening a SVN in your browser it should look something like this. Link to Kick's SVN.

The thing to look for is the "powered by Subversion" that tells you it's a SVN capable of being downloaded. Google Code is a popular SVN project provider if you're interested in making one.

      5. Make a folder named whatever you want, anywhere. For this example it's going to be Kick's SVN, so I shall name it Kick's SVN.

      6. Right click it and click SVN Checkout. If you copied a link in the previous step you should already see it in the URL field. If you don't, simply paste it into the field. Change nothing else and hit OK.

      7. Let the process finish and then hit OK to close out of the window. At this point you have all of the files of that persons SVN up-to-date and do not need to run updates. Refer to the quick guide below on how to update.

      How to Update a SVN

      • Right click the folder, and in place of where SVN Checkout was, there is a new button called "SVN Update". [IMG]
      • Clicking this will update the SVN with the changes made by the owner. The process will look very similar to when you used "SVN Checkout..."
      • Profit!!!

      Tips

      1. You can download specific parts of a SVN if you'd like. For example with Kick's SVN he has a folder in it called Kick's Profiles. If you used Checkout on this page every time you open the folder you made you have to open the Kick's Profiles folder as well. To alleviate this you can use SVN Checkout from any location in his SVN. I personally checkout to this part of his svn, however if you don't care for the Useful Stuff folder, you could even checkout here. Be careful with this though as if you dive too deep you may remove the ability for profiles to auto-load each other.
      2. Not having to restart on the install depends on your UAC settings and Operating System compatibility and so forth. If Tortoise SVN does not work (the button in the right click menu are missing) you should uninstall it, restart, install it again, and then restart.
      3. Depending on the content of the SVN you are using you might find QuestBehaviors in them. You should thoroughly read through the thread you found the SVN for a guide on what to do with them. If they are not mentioned it would be wise not to use them as it may be for something else they're working on.

I have Verizon fios. 150mb down, 65 up, and yet for a while now there's been a problem with YouTube load on certain providers and I can't even load 240p videos. Of course I didn't need this information, but I like it when I have options so I'll give it to people.
