I know botting 24/7 is very likely to get you banned...but what if you bot 12 hours in one area (e.g. Cata area) and then Northrend/Outland for another 12 hours...just switching it back and forth or over several areas. Are you less likely to be banned?

Or even bot 12 hours on one toon, the other 12 on another. Would this be safer? Does Blizzard check your account-wide logged-in duration or just the toons?

No one knows exactly what's safe. My guess is that Blizzard would see your whole account activity, not just per toon. But that's my guess. The only way I know switching toons would make it less likely to get banned is there'd be less of a chance of someone seeing your same toon farming in the same zone for 24 hours straight.
