World of Warcraft may be going free-to-play | Games | Geek.com

      • There is a new account type that has similar restrictions to Starter Edition accounts, called a Veteran Edition account.

You add this to their new item they will be selling in the store that you can then sell to players for gold. They are going Full Acheage. I knew this was coming when they put the store in, the 100% level boost and now gold selling so they get a cut. Oh man, this could be very bad for gold sales. The bot flood gates will open if they go F2P and the hacks, oh man.. the hacks... Sadly no bot can keep up with Hackers. If they hacks go full fledged, botting days be pretty much done as a gold maker.

Edit: This is PURE SPECULATION at this point, but the signs are all pointing one direction.

I saw a similar post as well from somewhere else. This may affect gold-selling accounts, but anyone who just uses the bot for leveling or farming mats, etc it won't affect really at all.

I think the Veteran Account though had some restrictions on it or something. I think a level cap or a gold cap?

I doubt it. I mean unless they come up with more mounts and pets to sell in the store, I don't see it coming soon. Unless they really come up with a way to embrace in game purchases, it would never work for them with the amount of people playing and the servers they have to maintain. Have you seen the ipviking DDoS attacks they get? Just to maintain servers and protection alone is worth over 300k a year. So if they do go FTP it will be the demise of WoW, not just gold selling.

MMO Champ were speculating that "veteran accounts" were a new flag for unsubbed players that were using up a new offer for free playtime of some kind, with similar restrictions to trial accts. Just to give older players a flavour of the changes and get them hooked again.

I agree the signs are pointing towards F2P. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they eventually go full F2P and completely eliminate subs. What will it mean for farmers? Hard to say at this point but probably nothing good.

I think people would continue to play and it would most likely entice people to buy gold because they are no longer spending money on a sub so why not spend that money on gold?

Yes, I agree. We just don't know what "official" offerings farmers will be competing with.

i dont think so, not sooner, minimum 3 millions subscribers thats 30 million usd per month, plus the transactions at the shop, no reason to put it free really

I'm thinking what adri is thinking. The profits from subs are way to much for them to eliminate it.

$15 x $12 = $180 per year per player. I can't imagine many players will be buying that much a year, unless you truly don't know how to make any gold. Personally, I believe these new accounts are meant to get old players back into the game. It's to give them a little taste of their past addiction, and rope them back in.

I think they just gonna name an trail account different and gave them more stuff and call the curently normal paid stuff veteran.
or when you'r account is loner active you get some cool stuff like they do in RuneScape 3

I sell gold on many F2P games and make a similar profit ... it wont affect us.
