Which SSD to get?

Hey there people I can't quite seem to make up my mind which kind of SSD I want to get... my choices are the following;
Force Series
MX-Technology 120GB 2.5 Inch SATA 6G
OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SATA III 2.5" SSD - OCZ
I am well aware there are some price differences but yea, I am going to upgrade from a 250Gb 5400Rpm HDD to one of these ones. any suggestions and why?

 

I wouldn't even bother tbh I have an ssd and haven't notices much of a difference!

 

So your saying you can't feel the difference from a 5400RPM HDD to a SDD..?

 

He probably forgot to activate AHCI in bios of his machine before he installed Windows. If you forget this you get about 1 / 4 of the effect a SSD gives (to activate this after windows is installed you need to google this process). having a SSD is probably the cheapest way to boost performance of any pc without spending the big bucks.

Ontopic: you might want to look on disks that use the New SandForce controller, which brand does not make much matter as these are nearly as fast all of them.

 

Yea.. thats why I want to get one >.< I just can't decide to be honest, their so close to each other spec so I wanted to get some feedback from other people. even with the AHCI disabled, an SSD is still WAAAY faster then an 5400RPM HDD.

 

Id look for review and just go for the one that has highest amount of IOPS. The sales pitch "max iops 85k" is a gimmick, id go look for real world data.

Or id just go for the one which is cheapest of the two, they are both good disks on paper. And i know the OCZ one have had great reviews.

On a second hand when looking thru tech articles i would for sure go for the OCZ disk. They are giving it superb reviews over and over, across the whole line.

 

Yea, I have been reading up on the OCZ and I haven't herd of an OCZ failing yet at least. how ever all of them have 80.000+ Iops, and just about the same read/write speed, and I haven't found any "dirt" on the Mach or the Crosair

 

Ye they are, I got a ForceGT 120gb, way faster then my WD Black, and 120gb is enough for Visual Studio, wow and battlefield 3.

 

You have it setup correctly? Because there is a major difference. Boot times drop significantly, load times for applications are faster. If you don't have it setup properly, then the performance can degrade.

 

I heard you get more out of OCZ and Intel has been having problems, I myself have 60gb which is enough for 3 games (plus operating system)... so you'll want at least 120gb.

Takes about 3-5 seconds to shutdown.

 

False I have achi enabled before I also have the 64bit option changed in the bios'

 

Tbh though I did get on of the first gens so maybe they have improved :/

 

If you plan to Boot from your ssd dont buy a vertex 3. They are incopatible to alot of s?t controllers, which causes alot of bluescreens.... ;-)

 

I've also heard this, which is why I bought Vertex 2 but the read and write speeds are a lot less compared to v3... still cheaper and more stable though.

Well I have also heart that the Vertex 3 isn't the best for the OS, but that was the last firmware, the newest one shouldn't have any problem, at least thats what 99% of all forum users said, that after they updated their firmware it worked like a charm
the Crosair one should be working fine with an OS on it... and the Mach I haven't found any complains about it either..

 

If you compared 5400rpm HDD with SSD, you would see a difference even with first gen SSD.

And he is trying to buy SATA3 SSD(About 500+mb/s read/write) which is twice as fast as SATA2 SSD(about 200mb/s read/write).

I would recommend a Crucial M4 drive. They're reliable, fast and relatively inexpensive. New firmware coming out soon will correct any issues with the drives. I replaced a 7,200 RPM drive with an M4 and boot times went from ~30 seconds to less than 5 seconds.

 

Before any recommendation may i ask you your mainboard model please?
Some mainboards dont support up to 500MB Read/write speeds and if your mobo is one of them SSD upgrade wont mean much. Also you can just buy a cheaper and slower one according to that.
